One of my favorite hobbies with herbs is to make salve. Herbs are natural and healthy while salve is the best precious weapon for woman to make beauty. I love the classic beeswax and infused olive oil combination, it’s interested in trying out different mixtures – especially when there is an endless amount of natural and organic DIY ingredients available on the market! I like to make my own herbal oils a few months in advance, and then later it is really great time to start with vegan salve.
Today, I am going to show you another amazing ingredient that helps to bring you a type of fascinating wax – Carnauba wax. Carnauba wax is obtained from of a species of sustainably grown palm known as the “Tree of Life” or Copernica cerifera. These indigenous trees flourish in northeastern Brazil and are a different species than the palms planted purely for their oil. The wax is derived from the leaf of this tree, and harvesting is done via manual pruning once a year, allowing the tree to continue growing for decades.
Let’s get started to explore how to make this type of vegan salve with Carnauba Wax.
Needed Ingredients:
- 3 Tbsp. organic Calendula Herbal Oil
- 2 Tbsp. organic mango butter
- 1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. organic organic carnauba wax
- 1 Tbsp. kokum butter
- 1/4 tsp. vitamin E oil
- 9 drops organic lavender essential oil
- 9 drops organic Roman chamomile essential oil
Step-by-step instruction:
- In double boiler, let’s slowly melt down the calendula oil, butters, and wax.
- Next step, prepare salve tins or jars while ingredients are melting.
- Once ingredients are fully melted, remove it from heat and quickly stir in vitamin E oil and essential oils.
- Immediately pour mixture into jars or tins, as the product will start to set as soon as you remove it from heat.
- Your product is almost completed. Put it there at the room temperature to make it cool and form.
- Now, you can use it and see how great it is.
Special note:
Carnauba wax has a melting point of about 180° F (82° C), which means it can take a while for it to melt. Rushing this process may scald the oils, so be sure to heat the mixture slowly.
Carnauba is a slow-setting wax so I like to give the salve about three days to set (with the lid off) before using it. The salve will have a shelf life of about one or two years, depending on storage conditions.
